In the 90s Hip-Hop DJ's kept a DJ bag's worth of Reggae on them at all times. But during the rise of open format and the subsequent EDM boom the essentiality of a having a solid Dancehall/Reggae set began to fade; today, Serato bred DJs don't even know what a riddim is. For the past couple of years Caribbean sounds have proliferated popular music. From "Rude" to "Lean On" to "One Dance" the charts are awash in island tinged tunes. While comparing playlists Formerly Erock and Roctakon realized they'd both been rocking more old school Dancehall than they had in ages. They decided to create a mix that reflected the weaving of classics and modern pop they'd both been doing live. Controllas is the mix of the summer, but it's not just a BBQ/pool party essential, Controllas is a gentle reminder to all Hip-Hop DJs that being able to rock a solid Dancehall/Reggae set is an essential part of what we do.
